The problem of solid wastes is becoming more and more an important environmental issue in Lebanon especially with the rapid increase in population and the absence of a sustainable solution in the long term for the wastes management problem. Lebanon produces approximately 4000 tons of municipal solid wastes on daily basis. They are either dumped in landfills (e.g. in Beirut and nearby caza, 80% of wastes are dumped in landfills), or randomly thrown in the open air (there are 700 open dumps in Lebanon) or incinerated. These procedures pollute the Lebanese nature, lead to a degradation in natural resources, the pollution of the air and underground water and various health problems and cause economic burdens for the Lebanese citizen with the purpose of getting rid of these wastes. And, according to the (META) Program (Mediterranean Environmental Technical Assistance), municipal solid waste generation in Lebanon is 1.4 million tons per year for a total population of 4.4 million. |
